If someone is trying to sell you something, and it’s new, and you’re interested, tell them no. Then when they leave, open Google.com and look into it further. Find the local experts, ask a friend, by all means do not sign up right away.
I want you to have the best internet marketing experience.
To that end, I’ll do whatever I can to educate you on what I know that is relevant to you. If I don’t know something that’s needed for your situation, I phone a contact and refer them. My goal is the win-win scenario. What’s good for your business is good for my business. Not everyone feels that way.
SEO scammers and marketers who don’t care
Everyday small business owners are contacted by marketers promising them the world. That’s annoying. I myself receive the same marketing pitches. I like to call them out on obvious errors in their canned pitch. A recent one (sender will remain unnamed so they don’t receive Internet points from me) sent the below email to me with this subject: “Increase your Ranking using Social Media”.

So, like I said, I called them out on it. Here was my reply:
Are you sure? I just watched a video where Matt Cutts answers the question of whether social signals directly affect PageRank and he says “not exactly”.There’s some book out there about the semantic web getting good reviews also, which I’ve only skimmed a few pages at this point. My $0.02Thanks,Tony LearyLocal Search ConsultantSocial Listings
Social Media Ranking Facts
Now I’ll pull out the garbage and give you the facts.
False: “Google has changed their algorithm to include social media as votes towards the organic ranking of websites.”
True: Facebook and the others have a high ranking domain and you can create a profile for your business. This is kind of a barnacle SEO tactic. You attach yourself to their high domain authority and hop along for the ride. It’s a citation for your business high in search results.
False: You need their targeted alarms to monitor your reputation.
True: There’s this little known service called Google – and they provide these tools to you for free. 1st one I suggest you try is called Google Alerts. Make sure you’re signed in with your Google account and create an alert for your business name in quotations and whatever else you’re interested in (e.g. your competitors). Then every time Google indexes something new with your search query, you’ll get an email.
As far as reputation goes, there’s a 2nd free Google tool right on your Places for Business Dashboard. There’s a reviews tab in there that’ll let you know whenever Google finds a review about your business elsewhere on the web.
False: You need to call them to discuss tremendous benefits of growing your business this year.
True: You don’t need to be told the benefits of growing your business. duh.
That book I mentioned
The book I forgot the exact title of that I didn’t waste my time looking it up because if they were an authoritative source they would’ve already known about it (intentional run-on) is called: Google Semantic Search: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Techniques That Gets Your Company More Traffic, Increases Brand Impact and Amplifies Your Online Presence.
It’s the latest, complete explanation on how the Internet works.
Why Thumbtack
False: I’m listed on Thumbtack because I absolutely love it and have used it constantly. It’s the best thing since sliced bread and I want to share it with the world.
True: I’m listed on Thumbtack because of Barnacle SEO and its high domain authority and I want to be found on Google.
Sarcasm aside, I support their mission statement:
Our mission
Ever wonder why you can buy any product online with a single click, but you can’t hire a photographer, tutor, contractor, or other local service professional without a dozen phone calls? So did we. Thumbtack’s mission is to make it dramatically easier to hire services, at the same time empowering independent professionals to grow their businesses.
I don’t want to make cold calls or walk-ins or random emails. I want you to call me because a friend recommended me or you found me online. I want you to have the best internet marketing experience.I
